Dangerous Intersection Accidents
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), intersection safety is the number one high risk area of highway safety and according to the Driving Institute of America, more than 40 percent of all car accident deaths occur at intersections involving drivers who do not yield right-of-way, who drive through a stop sign, or ignore or disobey a traffic light.
Did you know that the FHWA reports that more than 2.8 million intersection related crashes occur in the United States every year?
Intersections are the scene of serious traffic crashes because motor vehicles cross paths by exposing drivers to each other with little to no space to avoid colliding.
Part of the greater problem with dangerous intersection accidents is that red lights are in intersections. Running red lights fuel dangerous intersection accidents for the driver, oncoming traffic, and pedestrians. There is never an excuse for running a red light.
Other dangerous intersection accidents are not the fault of drivers but rather poor roadway design, and failing to provide traffic control devices, signs, warnings, markings, and/or other visual cues (lines on the road) or tactile cues to motorists. Failure to indicate that motorists must stop before entering and/or crossing the intersection is another problem. Also, the placement of a stop sign could be confusing to motorists.
